Happy Valentine’s Day

So, what do you do when you make plans for the
month and then totally blow them?
You make an I Heart You mini whatever.

Quilt sandwich

I will admit, I am not fond of hearts in any form. Not sure why, maybe because they are just over done. Could be I’m just a Grinch. I was very surprised to be wowed by this piece, after all, I have only seen eleventy hundred heart projects in the last 2 weeks!!!

I wanted to use the fabric in the 2nd from left heart, so all was built around it, and I had very little of most of these in my scraps. I used different creams in the background, I have no idea why, it’s just the way my brain works. The big heart has an oops in that I turned two of the pieces, upper right side, backwards. It’s just a slight shade variance. Not as noticeable in person as in photos.

To further mess up the piece I decided to FMQ in the background and stitch in the ditch around the hearts. What could go wrong? My FMQ is less than stellar, plus I am not great at getting thread tension right at all. You can tell I do not have a smooth motion in a lot of the squiggling I was trying to do.

The hearts and border got a straight line treatment of diagonal stitching. I alternated the direction on the hearts and then fanned out from the centers on each side. I thought about cross-hatching the hearts, and may go back and fill in if I get a wild hair. LOL!

So, I totally had not planned to make this piece. I should have been hand quilting on the baby blanket, baby IS due in March! Or I could have been knitting one of my Challenge items. But these moments are why I need to remember to allow myself to start something totally unplanned and frivolous. Because you never know where they will take you and what techniques you might learn on the way! Now I am less scared to FMQ stipples on my Grandma’s Sewing Basket, which IS my Feb OMG.

It works on my wall with different hangers, or on my hall table. Right now I have it hanging on my front door to share the love!

    1. That’s because I really didn’t zoom in on the stitching. LOL! Thank you, coming from you, the Goddess of all things quilty, this is so comforting. And the Master of doing unexpected things. I love your sense of off the wall!!

  1. Isn’t it funny how sometimes a design or colorway we normal dislike just grabs us? I love the alternating diagonals for the quilting of your line of hearts, all backed by the meander – looks great! I haven’t sewn any hearts this Feb. I have a heart top waiting to be quilted – it’s even on my UFO list for the year – but I won’t get to this month because my challenge UFO will take at least that long to do its quilting.

    1. I often am surprised when I see other projects in colors that are not my favs, and I just love them! I guess we just need to be open to the beauty in all things. Except spinach, there is no beauty in spinach. Blech! Thanks for dropping in!

  2. Sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants 🙂 I think this turned out perfect! Jumping right in with the free motion is the only way to go. The more we do it, the better we get and this was the perfect little project to play around on. Sometimes a small distraction from what we should be doing is a good thing. It’s like a small piece of cake when you are on a diet can keep you from eating the whole thing at 3 AM.

    1. Thanks for the sage advice. But I want to know, how do you know about the cake at 3:00 am thing? Do you have a camera stash din my house? 😨

  3. Wow you’re quilting choices are perfect! I love hearts, but that’s just me. This is the cutest mini-whatever! Thanks for linking to Wednesday Wait Loss.

  4. This is so funny. I am really iffy about hearts too and avoid them. Especially red ones. But you did it. Got some fabric backwards. Had a tussle with the quilting. And it looks great!

Thank you for linking up with Free Motion Mavericks – your quilt is this week’s featured project!

    Love, Muv
