Cosmetic Cases Make the Best Gifts

I went home last week to attend the going away luncheon of a friend. Her husband was promoted and transferred to a new job in Missouri. She is the 2nd of our PTA moms group to move away, I was the first. I didn’t want to go empty handed, so I knew a cosmetic case was just the thing to gift her. After all, she will need a travel case to use on her trips back to Indiana/Kentucky, where her daughters live, and Ohio, where she is from. Hopefully she will stop in Indy on her way to Ohio for visits!

For a fabric combo I went to my Dixie Fat Quarter bundle, which is dwindling quickly with all these cases! But the options make for such cute cases I can’t stop! I quickly chose the coral pieces and decided 3 prints would make for some great contrasts.

The aqua is for an upcoming graduate.

I chose the diamond print for the outside, the floral for the inside and the darker print for the binding. Since each case uses half of each FQ for the body, I had an easier time making binding for the pockets and case from a separate FQ. It’s hard to get a long bias piece from a 9″x22″ remnant.

I used the diamonds on the fabric for the quilting lines, I just ran a straight line between them. It made for a lot of quilting, but it went so smoothly on Mackie, I didn’t mind. In no time another case was made and I love it! Even better, Jenny loved it!

Plans for this week:

  1. Caddy for a graduate’s present
  2. Cosmetic Case for graduate #2
  3. Continue quilting on Pie Birds

    Hi Chris,
I am SO glad to know that cosmetic cases ARE the best gift. Once I figure out how to make them, they will become my go-to gift going forward. HAHA! Seriously though, I do really enjoying seeing what fabrics you pick out for them and especially the finished product. You do such great work! ~smile~ Roseanne

No we don’t see it because we wouldn’t look even if it was in my hands! We look at the overall project, silly goose. You are the only one that looks at very.single.stitch. I’m trying to sell that statement to myself – it’s not working so far, but I’ll keep preaching it! ~smile~ Roseanne

These are fabulous gifts, Chris! Is there a pattern for the cosmetics case that you could share? I never know what to do for girlfriends’ birthdays, and I like this idea a lot but wouldn’t know where to begin to make one. These would be fun little treasures to embellish and personalize, too.
