August OMG, Sewing Goals, Knitting Goals Recap

August OMG: make the top for Scarlet Stars

I changed fabric plans at the last moment and went with a semi solid, a check homespun, and Kona Snow.

Original, My version quilted

I also changed the borders to insert a narrow red border, 3/8″ finished, and then added the check at 2-3/4″. Finished it off with a 3/8″ binding all around. For the quilting I connected the inner star points with straight line quilting with my walking foot. Then I stitched a square within a square on the star centers. All this made for lots of ends to weave in! My saving grace was the snag tool I bought recently, it pulled those threads into the sandwich easy peasy!

In no time at all I was on to the border. For this I just used the check pattern, shown above, as a guide and created a square grid on point down each side. Then it was just a matter of sewing on the binding, tacking it down and throwing it in the washer/dryer!

Congrats on a very pretty finish. Your red quilt is very dramatic and eye catching. You had a great month overall, that has to feel good too.

Thank you. I kept thinking I was not getting much done this month, but looking back I really did get a lot accomplished. > >

Wow you got a lot done on your sewing list which makes sense as that’s much more comfortable to do in the heat than knitting:)

    • chrisknits August 31, 2018 / 10:26 am

Yes, I don’t tend to want large, warm, items on my lap in summer. Go figure. LOL > >

I know the feeling. I found myself knitting an Afghan in August!!! It’s been safely put away for a few weeks:)

The checkered fabric just makes it! I love your version.

Thanks! It wasn’t what I was going for, but it turned out to be enough.

    Hi Chris,
I love the changes you made to Scarlet Stars. That thin red border is just perfect – it really makes the red pop out more. And your quilting!!! Look at the back, the nice pattern you did. I love my walking foot, and I’m going to have to check out that tool for burying threads. I’ve been using a needle that threads on the side – can’t think of what it’s called but it works well. ~smile~ Roseanne

Thank you. I like it enough to keep it, maybe it will grow on me? LOL I hate trying to thread needles to bury threads! You do have to take care with less sturday threads, they will break with little effort.

The wall hanging turned out beautifully! I like that little border inserted to set off the larger ones!

I need to remember to use thin borders more often! I love there effect. Thank you.
