Today’s project is one that’s a secret. Don’t tell anyone! LOL. It’s my 2020 Guild Challenge, which I am in charge of, so of course I had to play along! The Challenge rules are easy as ABC. Cause they are the ABCs.
- First initial for your block! Maltese Cross for C
- Second initial for your first color. Blue Jay Blue for J
- Third initial for your accent color. Bittersweet for B
- Find a neutral. I went with Beige
Other guidelines were:
- Use as many shades of the colors you chose as you want.
- No smaller than 12″x12″, no bigger than 48″x48″, flat or dimensional.
I had thought to use Corn and Beans for the block, but doing a recent Moda Block changed my course. I used the same block it to make a baby quilt last year. My mind was whirling with the possibilities.
Not to be easy peasy about it, I decided to create a diamond shape in some of the sections. Cause why do anything completely drama free?
Fabric pull, test block, and EQ8 Mock-up
The intent with the fabric placement was to create that secondary pattern of a circle in the center.
I made a make-shift design wall by hanging a scrap of batting to a quilt hanger. Hey, it was almost big enough! But how to quilt, my usual dilemma.
I used my EQ8 to “draw” my quilting lines on the mock-up
Then I marked dots on the actual quilt to give myself visual cues
Then I used a straight ruler I picked up at JoAnn Fabrics to connect the dots.
It took a bit of time, but eventually I was on to the border, and then the binding was added. Wait, oops! What’s that? I missed a diamond on the border.
I can’t wait to reveal it at our next meeting.
We are holding it outside in a park due to the virus.
I do hope lots of ladies played along and we have a good showing!

love how the overall effect is circles!
Thank you. I love secondary patterns!
Energy and creativity.
Thanks! I guess it does keep the eye moving. > >
Hi Chris! Your EQ8 mock up really looks realistic. That closeup of your fabrics really shows how nicely the two pink shades pull out that design in the blue fabric. NICE job! ~smile~ Roseanne
Thanks! I kind of regret using the burgundy thread color, but I can’t take it out now! LOL >
I like the quilting in circles in that one quilt – nice!
That was my first spiral, I love the effect it gives. Thanks > >
Looks terrific! Have fun at the reveal in the park.
Do people with only two initials (like me) skip the first colour or the accent colour, I wonder?
LOL, you know, I don’t know, I don’t think I’ve ever met someone with just 2 initials. Now, 4, 5, 6…. >
That turned out beautifully, Chris! You really nailed the circle effect with the block and fabric placement. That sounds like a fun challenge!
Thanks! I do so love creating a circular secondary design with blocks. > >
Well done! This is great. I didn’t realize I could draw dot to dot on the EQ8 design. Have to try that with a quilt top that I’ve been procrastinating quilting. Thanks so much for sharing. Your quilt is lovely. Love the diamonds!
Dawn, I saved my quilt as a document file, then uploaded it to EQ as a fabric file. Then created a 1 block quilt with the “fabric” and opened it on block worktable and then set the grid to allow for drawing the lines. If that makes any sense? Thanks > >
Thanks so much! I’ve figured out how to get started and I’ve make a little progress.
Awesome quilting!!
Thank you! Need some aloe for that burn? LOL! > >
I really love the addition of the diamond–this is a great quilt! Congratulations!
Thank you! 😁 >
That looks really amazing! Interesting reading your process – thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I am pleased with the results! > >
Just beautiful.
Thanks! It was a fun Challenge > >
