Today we start the rounds of our SAHRR. To help us with what to add to our center block we need to visit Roseanne and Sue at Home Sewn By Us. They chose Spools. Yay!! I just did Spools for our Guild’s President’s Quilt, in glorious Kaffe fabrics, she loves it. So I knew just what I wanted to do. But wait, did I?

I have to back up first. When I finally got around to deciding what I was going to do with the 2023 SAHRR I was playing along in the normal fashion, rounds around my center block. This is what I came up with as a design possibility with the 1st round imagined.

A Log Cabin with interspersed Spools.
I was planning to use half blocks of Week 1 and half blocks from Week 2 for the round. Just to reduce the amount of sewing and keep the size smaller. But even that was too much for me to face. LOL. It’s been a long few months around here and due to medical issues my fatigue level has been high. So I am trying to reduce the stress and busy-ness around here.
Even though I love what the above design led to, I didn’t have the oomph to carry it out. So, where am I going with this year’s SAHRR? A very simple, basic, layout. So my Week 1 Spool is exactly that. A Spool.
I used my EQ8 to make the block sized to my 9″ finished dimension, and just followed the cutting directions to execute it. I made sure I had a nice gradation of my olives by stopping at The Stitching Post last week to pick up more Kim Diehl fabrics.

If you compare my block from last week to this one, you would see that my center block is only 5″ unfinished, not 9.5″ like the spool. How are those going to work in a project? Come back next week to see how I resolve that issue.
Roseanne and Sue have the link up this week, where they detail the method to their SAHRR madness! And check out all the sponsors who have donated prizes for the 2023 SAHRR at Gail’s site.

Hi Chris! I just love the colors in this block. I know you’ll be carrying that throughout the whole project. Gorgeous. A spool is all I have to offer this week, too. One little itty bitty spool. HAHA! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
Hey, itty bitty or loud and proud, it’s all good! We each have our vision and I know we will have a very diverse collection.

I’m intrigued to see where you are taking this design.
It was a good choice to size it down now–you can always increase its size later on! Nice use of fabrics!
It will definitely be the smallest one I have done so far, and that’s fine, I have plans for where it will be displayed.

Oooh! That’s a cool Spool block, Chris!! Thinking and wondering about my own project. Off to check…
If I hadn’t just made 3 of them I might not have thought of it! Good luck with your project!

The spool block turned out perfectly, and I’m sure you have a great plan in mind. Everyone comes up with fun and unique layouts with the SAHRR. I’m actually using my abandoned version from last year as the center of something new this year. I sincerely hope you return to good health soon.
Thank you Sara, I love how we each make it our own. Good luck with your RR.

Oh goodness, I didn’t realize your center block is 5″ unfinished! Your spool block is lovely – all the feels for that Kim Diehl fabric. Will be fun to see where you go with this, and I know it will be fantastic. I hope things calm down for you, and that you recover your full energy soon. Take care!
I realized I should have taken a photo of them side by side, but now I’ve already converted the center square to it’s final size, so you’ll just have to imagine it. LOL! Thanks, I hope my vision comes together like I plan.

Love the colors in your spools!
Thanks you! I love all greens and most reds/clarets!!
>
Very Clever!! I love how your whole quilt is one spool!!!
Hmmm, You definitely have an interesting approach to this year’s mystery. Looking forward to seeing your path forward.
I just fall more in love with each block I make. Love these Kim Diehl fabrics.

Nothing like a design problem to solve. I eagerly await . . .
It keeps me busy! LOL

It’s looking great! Can’t wait to see your progress with this year’s mystery quilt 🙂
Thanks! I hope it works out!

I’ve just jumped in and I’m excited for the challenge. Your block is so great and I can’t wait to see what you do.
So glad you are joining us!! It’s so neat to see what people come up with from the clues.
