Wednesday Whims Freyja is Fraught with Fretting

Before reading this, remember my word for 2020 is Joy, if it isn’t sparking Joy, I need to alter things.

I worked on Freyja, my Frolic and also the UFO Challenge number chosen this month, catching up on clues 5-7. I think this will be my last mystery. Why can’t designers just say: cut X and set aside, cut X and make pinwheels, cut X and make HSTs. I understand she was addressing the scrap sewers, I’m doing yardage, but I don’t need 4 pages of directions for each clue, just the facts ma’am.

On the FB group someone complained about the confusing clues, next thing you know, someone else is lecturing there shouldn’t be negative posts. Seems quite a few have had issues with the clues, and when sycophants* start chiding, plus the strict “no posting of ANY SIZE OR PIECE COUNTS!!!! OMG, YOU CAN’T DO THAT!!!”, I am out of there. Unfollow. But, her mystery, her choice, I am just tired of those who attack people who slipped up or were looking for clarification.

I switched back to my normal way of making HSTs for clue 7. Because trying to line up her ruler, to be sure I am on the fabric edge, twisting it back and forth to cut straight or diagonal, and bias edge sewing, just isn’t my idea of quick, efficient, or easy. But again, her mystery, her choice. I also was not happy to see the large triangles I cut were for Flying Geese. I make mine 4 at a time, not by piece. Again, too much biasing of the edge for my liking. My machine did not like the dog ear-less pieces, they kept feeding into my plate. Argh!

So, I won’t be doing future mysteries, especially if they aren’t sparking Joy in my life. But anyway, here are my pieces, except for Clue 7 Pinwheels and the loose HST pieces I have yet to cut. I will wait for the reveal to see what she does with those.

I am good on HSTs for a looooooong time!

This is the ruler I use for trimming my Flying Geese, it’s not made for that purpose, but it does the trick!

*Quilting heroes are great to look up to, but I’ve experienced too much FB drama in designer groups to want to stay in them anymore. Except my Mudsocks Guild group, love that closed group!

Wednesday Whims

Merry Christmas!!!

I hope all is Merry and Bright in your home today. We are on celebration #3 and will head back home tonight. Eager to get back to our beds and our normal. OK, my machine and his guitar!! LOL

I made sure to have a Happy Holiday this season by making Happy Holidays! I couldn’t resist, especially after buying the perfect bundle of fabric at Unraveled. I did add another red to the bunch and changed up the fabric placement a little. I knew those lighter greens would give me pause when I picked out a Grunge Dot background in a light neutral, but looking at the original I noticed they also had some wash outs from their prints, so I forged ahead.

As always, EQMini mock-up, unfortunately it doesn’t let me do odd sized centers

I let the greens and reds create a chain in the medallion. The center went quick and then it was time to build the flying geese borders  before adding a thin plain border.

Now, the question, add the holly and berries, or not?

I chose, not. I wanted to be able to put this out at non-Christmas times of the year, so I left those corners bare. Now on to those Prairie Points I swore I would never use again. LOL. But this time, they are within borders, not on the edge. Much easier to deal with.

I sewed them all around to keep them in place, but found out the mistake when I added the last borders. I should have done the top and bottom and then added the side Prairie Points when adding the side borders. The corners of the points get caught up in the first seams and create bulk. I just had to free the corners and then sew them on top of the first borders when I sewed on the last borders. Not a big deal, just needed to rip some stitches.

And rather quickly it seems, I had the top done and now it’s joined the pile of to-be-quilted-in 2020 projects! My 2020 UFO Challenge is almost at a full 12 items!

Happy Holidays!!

Wednesday Whims

OK, I talked about a lot of Squirrels last week, but I got only 1 done, and it’s not ready to show! So what do I have to show for the week? Illness for most of it, but the rest of the week was spent chasing a completely different Squirrel! LOL.

I have been lured into returning to cross-stitch by some lovely pieces Celtic Heart has been creating. So I pulled out some pieces I had lurking in the FO pile and got to work on finishing them!

Waiting for some corded trim to go around the edges.

These will be displayed on frames that I bought, again, lured by CH’s acquisitions, from Hobby Lobby.

So I will leave you to ponder, until Friday, just what it is that I did get done from my Wednesday Whims post of last week.
